Writing to Democrats who are not members of the Progressive Caucus:

Most Democrats, even if quite “conservative” on an issue like nuclear weapons, nonetheless care much more about other issues that more directly affect their constituents.

  • The astronomical cost of nuclear weapons ($1.7 trillion over the next 30 years) is money that could better be spent on addressing the climate crisis, our crumbling infrastructure, healthcare, education, and many other things for which there never seems to be enough money.
  • Funding for nuclear weapons is essentially corporate welfare, using tax dollars to line the pockets of a few wealthy corporate executives rather than benefiting the relatively small workforce that still works on nuclear weapons.
  • The vast majority of governments and their populations around the world are demanding the complete elimination of nuclear weapons before they eliminate us, including many of our closest allies in NATO and the Pacific. It is only a matter of time before Germany, Netherlands, Belgium and Italy demand the removal of US nuclear weapons from their soil. Other NATO countries like Spain, Iceland, Norway, and Greece could be even closer to signing the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. Public opinion polls in Australia, Japan and Canada also show overwhelming support for joining this treaty.
  • Our relations with the rest of the world depend on respect for human rights and the rule of law. This new treaty is now the law of the land in more than 50 countries and soon in many more.
